I was filling out an application to the University of Hawaii at Manoa and I saw that it required you fill out your ethnicity. I thought that was illegal- does anybody know who's right?

It should say it isn't required. You can get benefits sometimes based on ethnicity and the school can get 'diversity credit' sometimes. They can ask and you can just not fill that out. Then they will assume you are white.

Call the admissions office. I just checked online and it didn't say your ethnicity was required. However, I do know that with most things Hawaiian, they look to help native Hawaiians as often as as much as possible. Not in a negative way, mind you. Like Native Hawaiians are usually guaranteed admission to certain schools etc. So it may have something to do with that.

I downloaded the application as well and don't see an ethnicity section, only a section for international students. But I still suggest calling the admissions office.

Some universities that are in ethnic areas can. I know most do not. The best thing that I can think of for you to do would be looking up the local laws in Manoa to see what their stance is on affirmative action.

Well its not illegal to ask for it. Its true that some colleges have a "quota" of black people that they have to let in.

For example Harvard University has to let in a certain number of black people every year, if I applied (I'm white) with a 4.1 GPA and a black person applied with a 4.0 GPA they would take the black person.

I don't mean that to sound racist, it's the truth. But that is what they ask you your ethnicity for. In case of the University of Hawaii however, they probably just ask your for statistical purposes.

its ethnic profiling called "affirmative action", Liberals think that minorities for some reason, cant do things on their own, that they need some "help", so they require universities, police depts and fire depts to have special quotas of minorities, even though the minority may or may not be fully qualified next to an applicant who is more qualified.

If you were born in America, that makes you a native, just put native american for everything. use their racism to your advantage

You don't have to answer, but some answers might make you eligible for scholarships etc. The university also keeps statistics on the makeup of their student body, so it's helpful to them if you answer.

It's usually optional if you want to fill it out. But I think they do it not to screen people out, but to get a more diverse campus.

Eh...not sure, but are they giving you financial aid? Then it might be necessary. Try leaving it blank and see what happens.

Yes, they can. It's legal.
It's so they can discriminate against you, if you are white.
(You white people deserve it for voting Democrat.)
