Life is dangerous for your boy at any age.

He will be taught how to tackle and play the game properly. The RFU continuum introduces tackling, scrum and line-outs at appropriate ages.

He will learn how to be part of a team, how to win and how to lose. He will get hurt, of course. I broke ribs and collar bones. My son has broken his nose. They heal.

My son has been playing Rugby union since the age of 8 (he's now 13)...we come from a family of rugby lovers with both my husband & I playing Rugby League & hubby playing union as well back in the day. My daughter is 9 and dying to play rugby too...

Our son is one of the smallest in his team so this was always a worry for me, but as the others have mentioned...your boy will be taught how to play safely and the right way without any major injuries.

Sure there is a chance of injury as with any other sport but with proper training at an early age he will know what to do and not to do for his own safety.

Let him have a go...it's great for his self esteem.

Any sport is dangerous in some way, but if he is taught correctly and learns how to play properly then the danger is reduced. Of course no one can say that you will not get injured playing any sport it is just chance most of the time. I played rugby union for 28 years and I am still around.

No more so than any other sport such as football or cricket. Rugby is a contact sport, like any other, so he may pick up a bump or scrape. Having played at that age myself I can tell you that the contact is very minimal so nothing like you that on TV!

Rugby teaches many things and is a very disciplined game so in my opinion it can only be beneficial to children as well as being great exercise.

At the age of 8 they normally play "Tag" or "Touch" rugby. There are no line outs, uncontested scrums and do not tackle, 2 of my boys have played since they were 8 and still do now at 17 and 14!

NOT tag rugby, that is, but RUGBY

All sport carries a relative risk of injury, As your boy grows older he will learn and improve technique which should stand him in good stead for reducing injury. Poor technique and Bad luck are the main causes of injury.
In my opinion Rugby League is the by far the toughest game in the world with the collision and impact of the tackle, Just as relentless as the last one.
It is a Tough game for Tough Men.

It really depends on the size and weight & aggressiveness of
your 8 year old. If he really wants to learn there may be no
stopping him. Rugby is a combination of soccer & football.
It has more contact than soccer but not as much as foot-ball.
Again, if your 8 year old is larger than most or more muscular,
he will have no problems. If he is a shrimp for his age you better
attend his first match then make your decision.

All sports carry a risk to them, as long as you son is taught by an experienced coach/teacher there should be no problems the health benefits of sports vastly out way the risk. just think you have a child who plays sport rather than one who sits in front of the TV/Computer. You may even have a future star on your hands. Good Luck.

yes, it is dangerous, but nothing to serious i have played since i was his age and i have been injured but nothing to stop me from playing the game i love. if your worried about injuries then rugby might not be the best sport for him though. its pretty intense. but it'll make a man and a gentlemen outta him i say you let him give it a shot

a child of 8 is only allowed to play tag rugby that is very safe he can be shown how to tackle and ruck but that is in controlled way so he get to learn more ,if he wants to try let him have a week or two first to see if he likes it..
