Don't usually quote the Bible but as a poetic reference this is probably the best explanation I have ever found. BTW it has been the source for song and tale for centuries so I am not alone in my admiration of its prose:

New Testament- I Corinthians 13
1 If I speak in human and angelic tongues 2 but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal.
2
And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing.
3
If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.
4
3 Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, (love) is not pompous, and it is not inflated,
5
It is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, and it does not brood over injury,
6
It does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth.
7
It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.
8
4 Love never fails. If there are prophecies, they will be brought to nothing; if tongues, they will cease; if knowledge, it will be brought to nothing.
9
For we know partially and we prophesy partially,
10
But when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.
11
When I was a child, I used to talk as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I put aside childish things.
12
At present we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but then face to face. At present I know partially; then I shall know fully, as I am fully known.
13
5 So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Hi, I am Rational Spirituality,

I distinguish between love, which is unconditional, and attachment. Most people don't.

Love, to me, does not end when I divorce someone, or when they do something I do not like, or when they run away from me.

People who tell me: "I loved someone...", didn't. Because if you can use "love" in the past tense, it never was.

Affections connected to attachment are, in my eyes, wortless, and an insult to a person who could truly love.

I realize that I was ever loved only by God.

You may access "Rational Spirituality" on the Dhaxem website. Conveyed only in February 2006, it is already a major force amongst the thinking people.

PS: I like your rose tinted glasses! I hope that taking them off one day, will not be too painful. Life is, afer all, just a series of lessons and tests from which we grow,

Have a good day.

Love is a profound feeling of tender affection for or intense attraction to another. People in love are often considered to have "good" interpersonal chemistry.[1] Love is described as a deep, ineffable feeling shared in passionate or intimate interpersonal relationships. In different contexts, however, the word love has a variety of related but distinct meanings: in addition to romantic love, which is characterized by a mix of emotional and sexual desire, other forms include platonic love, religious love, familial love, and the more casual application of the term to anyone or anything that one considers strongly pleasurable, enjoyable, or desirable, including activities and foods. This diverse range of meanings in a single word is commonly contrasted with the plurality of Greek words for Love, reflecting the word's versatility and complexity.

In my opinion, there is no 'what is love' because you cannot define love.

Love cannot be defined...however, it's illusion: infatuation can be.

Love is just a metaphysical thing that often creates a change in personality, a change in the look at life, or even a change in someone's life.

However, no matter what anyone says..love cannot be defined.

The only way I can define love is by saying its something you CANNOT define and if you ever question loving someone, you do not love them.

Love cannot be questioned. Thats it. Done.

A A chaotic situation in your brain when all of your hormones are acting. Methyl-ethyl-diamine has also something to do with this acute mental sickness called "love".

B A deep friendship, feeling of togetherness, shared dreams...a transcendental feeling called "love".

Usually one can shift from phase A to phase B after awhile and everything is fine. In some cases, one repeats phase A again and again, always freighting to jump into phase B. One cannot call her/his love "everlasting" one before she/he has reached phase B.

Love is all consuming. It's when you are aware of the needs and feeling of that special person that completes you, for example knowing that no matter what comes up their with you, even when he 0r she disappoints you there nothing that can be work through when you hear their or seen their face it's like spring time all over again like catching your breath, it's the wind and the hot sun pulsating within you, she or he is my FRIEND,

There is a passage in the Bible ..... 'Love is not deceit, Love is not having to say sorry.....' Don't know the whole verse, but it is a good description. (Was read out at a wedding)!

My interpretation would be.....If you love someone - you won't hurt them, do almost anything for them and be there for them.

Wish I knew the whole paragraph from the Bible, but was obviously not paying attention!!!

As a previous answerer said (and kudos to them), it is caring entirely for others and their well-being while not caring unnecessarily for yourself. Total selflessness is love in its truest form... agape.

Of course, the ancient Greeks also listed two other kinds of love: philos, which is brotherly love, and eros, which is physical attraction.

skorpi_ru (above) has hit the nail on the head. It is complete unselfishness; putting others before your self; altruism. It can be applied in different ways (friendly, sexual, parental, etc.), but there is only ONE love.

Of course, it can be used in a more trivial way, e.g. I love ice cream, but I don't think you were asking for a dictionary definition - you could look that up yourself.

Its complete unselfishness. You would do something for a person, your partner, children, parents etc, without thinking of a reward or something in return. Love is all about giving and caring, without aiming to get something in return
