I watch gaming shows regularly, according to that , the PS3 costs about 800$ to make. I figure they hope to make up their losses in their games for it.

All companies that have consoles lose money. Also they don't just lose a bit of money, they lose hundreds of millions in most cases. The companies get that money back by selling all their consoles, games, and accessories. If you look at it, it's obvious that they lose money. If you bought a computer with the specs of the Xbox 360 or the PS3 then you'd have to pay at least over 1000 dollars if not over 2000 dollars.

I'm pretty sure Sony has said the PSN will always be free at least a few times now. PlayStation Plus is something different and entirely optional.

They are losing money on the consoles themselves, but make loads of money on the games, which cost next to nothing to produce but sell for 60$.
