I currently work with GIS and, basically, it is an electronic map with different things on different layers. This enables you to analyse geographic data or simply keep a record of geographic assets.

For example, the possible earliest example of this geographic analysis was during a cholera epidemic in London. Using a dot on a map for each case, a doctor was clearly able to see that there were clusters of dots, and this led to the source of the disease, a contaminated water pump.
