I bought a pattern (Simplicity 3977), and it looked like a fairly easy task to sew (d), or the mantel scarf. It is asking to cut, using this tool, 4--4-1/2"x42" strips, among others. I can read the 4-1/2" strip on the ruler, but am terribly confused about the 42". How do I do it, please? I just got the kit today, and was hopeful I could learn to quit on my own, using these tools that I heard were so "easy..

When you buy your fabric (and have washed and dried it), the width of the fabric will be approximately 42 inches from selvedge to selvedge. The instructions are telling you to cut 4 1/2" strips along the width of the fabric (42" long).

I looked up this pattern so I could see what the mantel scarf looks like. The block you are making is called Ohio Star. I've included some links below to the traditional method of making this block without a fancy ruler.

The stars in this pattern are made up from a solid center (likely 4 1/2"), four solid corners (again 4 1/2") and four quarter square triangles. For a first project, these are not the easiest to make, no matter what the pattern says, so you need to cut yourself some slack.

Ok, the 42" strips it's asking for are probably your solid center and solid corners. Those are probably NOT the ones you need the ruler for. Re-read the instructions for those strips. It will probably say to cut them into 4 1/2" squares and set aside.

What are the other cuts they are asking for? It's likey THOSE are the strips you'll be sewing together then using the special ruler for. I believe they are trying to help you avoid having to cut a bazillion bias triangles, and instead use strips cut in a certain way to make it easier. Look at this page, about half-way down, to see a picture of what the "traditional" method of sewing QST (quarter-square triangles) looks like.

If you post more questions, along with the next part of the instructions and cutting sizes, I can help you more. If I understand better what type of basic blocks you're making, and in what sizes, I can tell you better how they want you to use the tool.

Good luck, when it "clicks" then you'll be sailing along.
