Most likely, your connector isn't functioning. I've had this problem so I'd suggest you buy a new connector. If your IPod is new and has a warrenty, you might be able to get one.

Oh boy, sounds similar to a problem I had. I had to take it into the Apple Store and exchange it for a new one. My warranty was still valid, so it was all good.

By the way, you know that it's totally broken when the screen is all dark and the iPod's hard drive is constantly whirring.

Something must be wrong. Try to ask the store you bought it from. It might just be your computer that doesn't read it. Do you have Windows 98? Because most of the time it doesn't work with 98.

Take it in to a local iPod / mac store. I did, and they replaced mine on the spot. You do have a protection plan, right? Good luck!

Sounds like you have a bad cable. Try getting a new cable and see if that fixes it.
