The AIDS virus is a mutation of SIV (Simian Immunodeficiency Virus) that is native to a certain species of monkey in Africa. It is believed that humans were exposed to it through hunting those monkeys and either getting bitten by them or getting monkey blood into cuts they suffered during or before the hunt.

Samples of the AIDS virus have been found in tissue samples all over the world for decades, including a blood sample from a man living in the Congo in 1959, an American teenager in 1969, and a Norwegian sailor in 1976. Because it was so rare back then and because the medical technology was more primitive, it was not identified until it hit epidemic proportions with the increase of international travel, intravenous drug use, and increased use of blood transfusions in medical treatments.
