I think they're called cookies. The little dancing MSN people, the modem icon .... the list goes on. I was asked to remove them on the phone with a fixer chappy who got me back on line (bless his heart), but we never got round to getting them all back!
Any suggestions are welcome, I'm computer illiterate!

Chances are you have been taken into Msconfig and unticked the startup items.

To get them back, you need to go to Start> Run> type "MSCONFIG", click "Startup" and tick the items that you need to be available, such as MSN Messenger.

I wonder if you've accidentally "collapsed" what is called the Task Bar, which usually lives at the bottom of the screen by accidentally clicking, holding and dragging it downwards - it is very easily done - I was always getting asked to "retrieve" them in the office I used to work in. It is still there, but squashed down to a thin line at the bottom of the screen.

Move the mouse arrow down to the bottom edge of the screen. If I am right, it should change to a little black upwards pointing arrow. Hold down the left mouse button and - keeping the button held down - move the mouse upwards a bit. The Task Bar should magically re-appear.

You're talking about the icons in the system tray - the support tech probably got you to close the programs down temporarily while problem was fixed. If that is the case they should come on next time you turn on the computer.
