I have a little problem. I'm a bellydancer and every time I perform I get at least a few women who think I'm a hoochie and at least a few men who think I'm dancing for male sexual attention. They don't approach me and actually SAY those words, but it's obvious as to what they're thinking. My husband almost got in a fight once with a guy because the guy was talking to me like I was a common whore. Some women tell me I have low self-esteem because they say I'm not respecting my body.
What is a nice polite way to tell them they're wrong about bellydancing and that in reality it's a female-empowering spiritual art form?

I've danced in many different places. But I get this attitude at scheduled performances that are sometimes held in art cafes and coffeehouses. I don't get paid to do it, and when I am paid, the money goes to charity.
