Raccoons produce a thick coat so they stay warm. They do mostly come out at night, but they are most definitely around. Trapping season for raccoon is during the winter, so they are obviously out and about.

Since they are nocturnal animals, humans do not normally come into a great deal of contact with raccoons during the winter.

Raccoons remain in torpor for much of the winter, so they remain in their dens, but they will go out on warmer days to forage for food. They also occupy themselves with mating, since their mating season is in the winter.
