Citric Acid is a compound. It is made up of more than one element. Only those more than 100 substances in the periodic table are elements. Any substance made up of two or more different kinds of these is a compound.

My understanding is a compound is just that. A compound (mix) of other things. An elemental substance is a single substance. (no mix). CItric acid is a compound.

An element is made of only one kind of atom. Like oxygen ,nitrogen, carbon , iron, gold, (Can only be split by a nuclear reaction) Elements have symbols.
A compound has 2 or more elements chemically combined. It can be split by a chemical reaction. Ex: water H2O, carbon dioxide CO2, carbon tetrachloride CCl4
Citric acid is a compound. We can write a formula for it because we know exactly what elements are in it. C6H8O7
Most things you see in nature are mixtures. They can be separated by physical means.
You can not generally tell whether a material is an element or compound just by looking at it. Chemical tests(qualitative analysis) or perhaps physical, like density, would tell.

elements remain by themselves (H,O,K) while compounds exist in a paur of 2 or more (H2O, NaCl).C6H8O7 is citric acid
