Wikipedia has articles on slaves and slavery (also see external links at end of articles). I don't know where you'de find information on whether there were any free black people or black citizens of other countries who were free to move around the United States.

I searched for 'free blacks' in wikipedia and found an article on the 'Society for the Relief of Free Negroes Unlawfully Held in Bondage', set up in 1775.
