Just building new system - amd64 3800+, mini atx board with onboard graphics, 3 sticks of ram, dvd writer, tv card and 2 hard discs. The case I bought off ebay turned up with a cheapo 'pegasus' 300 watt PSU. Do you think this psu is up to the job or know of any websites that list the power consumption of individual components ?

Go get a new 450+W PSU. This way, there are no worries. A calculator is linked below.

The power supply is the most important part in your system. Of course the CPU is the brain of your computer, but the brain wouldn't work without the heart, or PSU. Right around 400 watts will be ideal for your setup. Mini ATX boards don't take as much power as standard ATX, so you're okay there. Also, don't buy anything with under 25A on the +12V rail or under 25A on the +5V rail. This is important if you want a rock-solid stable PC.

Get a bigger one unless you want horrific performance, and want to wait a month for it to blow. For new systems 420-450 is pretty much minimum. Try looking at newegg.com they usuall show power consumption...just match your components...and find an appropriate psu.
