My 2-months old boy has a mouth thrush. We did 10 days treatment with Nystatin, but the white patches are still there! My nipples are bright pink too, which is a sign they are infected.
How did you get rid of it?

I had the same problem with my son. I took him to the doctor to get him some medicine. For yourself you'll need an antifungal cream on your nipples or they'll start to get really itchy after each feed. You both need treatment as you will only keep reinfecting each other which is maybe why the Nystatin didn't seem to work.

It doesn't matter if the baby doesn't have a diaper rash or yeast infection down there! Thrush is a yeast infection of the mouth, mostly occurring on the tongue. Thrush is caused by foreign bacteria (by foreign I mean new to the baby) from unsterilized nipples, new toys, spoons and forks and maybe just from the new foods ( Is she feeding her foods that are more acidic and so on). At this point however, baby is old enough to not have to sterilize things anymore, be sure she washes everything in warm to hot soapy water (especially before the first use) and rinses it with the hottest water she can handle. If she knows her water is not of good quality, then yes, she maybe should still sterilize. If the baby continues to be untreated for the thrush, she will develop a diaper rash. Tell your friend to take her to her doctor and get a simple antibiotic. It usually clears within days. Good Luck

My second daughter was born with an asymptomatic thrush infection, and a bad latch, so she passed it to me. It was AWFUL. I'd had 2 C-sections, but this was worse! It hurt to shower. It hurt to wear a bra, or not wear a bra. It hurt to wear a seat belt. It hurt to hug my husband or toddler. I couldn't find a comfortable sleeping position. And when she woke up and cried to be fed, I cried too! I had horrible, gaping holes in both nipples, and they were pink and had little peely bits that looked like paper cuts?

Anyway...We tried Nystatin. 3 courses. Along with diluted vinegar soaks, and sterilizing everything we could, and air drying the poor boobs and every other thing we could come up with. We tried a pharmacist-compounded nipple cream that my OB called in, something with an antibiotic, an antifungal, and a few other ingredients. It didn't work either. A lactation consultant said we should try over-the-counter Lotrimin. It didn't work. Finally, we resorted to a 21-day course of Diflucan, along with all the other hygienic measures. And THAT did the trick.

Things started to get better right away.

Good luck!

You can try grapefruit seed oil. Some women find it works when nystatin doesn't. It is available in health food stores. Put it on your nipples before and after each feeding and in the babies mouth. Also use acidophilus. Take 1-2 pills twice a day, and give some to your baby too, if you want. Just open the capsule, mosts babies like the taste.

Also:
You must treat everything that comes in contact with your breasts or the babies mouth AT LEAST once a day.

Boil bottles and pacifiers (if used). Teething rings if you can. Otherwise clean them as much as possible using grapefruit seed oil and detergent. You may want to consider taking away soft toys for the time being so you only have to treat them once, just before you give them back.

Laundry, particularly bras, must be washed in the hottest water possible. Use hydrogen peroxide in the wash, and vinegar in the rinse. Dry thoroughly, sun bleaching may help.

Hi,
I had the same problem. I don't know if you can get this where you are, but I used Daktarin on my daughter (2 1/2 months) and it cleared up in about three days, but I continued to use it for a week. I tried Nystatin too, and found the same problem as you, it didn't clear up.
I am breast feeding, and I found that after a feed, I rubbed a little on my nipples and they felt a whole lot better (I didn't notice if they were a different colour, but they were a little more painful than normal)

You have to go back and see your dr. My daughter just got over it about a week ago. And I was told that if it doesn't get better by the time you are done with your 10 days of antibiotics you are supposed to go back. Sometimes they require more or a stronger kind. Make an appt as soon as you can and make sure that you tell them that you have it as well, because you can pass it back and forth and never get rid of it unless you are both on antibiotics and get it cleared up.

I had thrush also on my nipples 4 days after delivery. every time I nursed her we kept passing it back and forth. I treated myself with a cream nystatin 4 times per day and she had a medicine that I gave her I cant remember how often. They also make a violet treatment that is pretty effictive, talk to your ob or the lacation consultant or the dr. Good luck its very painful for the baby if it gets too far progressed it can make their tongue very sore.

Definitely try Gentian Violet....it works!! You can use it for both you and your baby's mouth...make sure you treat both of you. It stains purple, but after two or three days it will be cleared up!

I haven't tried this on my sons face, but I mix half water half organic apple cider vinager mix on my son's yeast infections and it works great. You might also try yogurt to kill the yeast. Your baby doesn't have to eat it, just spred it on his face. Make sure the yogurt is plain.
