food. food was rationed in the war. finding food for all these people, and justifying it to the occupants, must have been a real problem

space. even as much as to lie down

privacy. even for the most basic activities like washing and going to the toilet. And you don't really think they had water flushed toilets and electric power in that hole- do you?

Need to stay absolutely silent most of the time. for fear someone might hear you, and call the gestapo. As they eventually did.

Well they were isolated from the rest of the world , something that was very hard on Anne. Tensions grew quickly between the inhabitants of the annex, because of their forced confined conditions. Also the constant fear for their helpers and themselves of being found out. Also food became less as it was hard to find as the war progressed.
