How do you feel when students leave your class early or don't come at all? I've been doing this in some of my classes but I don't know if my teachers are offended or if they will not pass me b/c of this. Thanks for your input!!!!

I have my attendance policy written on all of my syllabi. Most of my colleagues do as well. Usually, there are consequences for missing more than three classes, but these consequences vary from professor to professor. In my classes, grades begin to drop after three unexcused absences.

However, some professors run their classes in such a way that absences do not impact students' grades. Professors who have classes like this usually believe that it is a student's responsibility to engage with the material, and if they do not, it is the student's loss, and not the professor's concern.

Every professor I know believes that it is rude and disruptive when students leave class early. Although I've never failed a student for this, my attitude toward them is certainly affected by their disrespectful behavior. I'd be much less likely to extend myself to help, or to accept the excuses of a student who regularly demonstrates that they do not respect my life's work.

When students need to leave class early for important appointments (medical or otherwise), or will be missing a class for specific reasons, they usually contact me beforehand and let me know. When they demonstrate both good manners and a sense of adult responsibility by doing this, I am completely understanding, and am not at all offended.

When I taught college level, it was college policy to lower a student's grade after three unexcused absences.

When a student was 'between' grades and it was left to my discretion to go either up or down, I would go for the lower grade for a student like you.

I don't appreciated it at all, personally i think its rude but attendance isn't a requirement just as long as you turn up for the exam and hand in the essays.

But i don't think it does you any favours especially if you need help later on!
