Yes, it should definitely be legalised and regulated to keep the clients and sex-workers safe and healthy - this should be the primary aim. The current situation is quite ridiculous and does not reflect the need that is out there or the potential dangers which some sex workers are in.
If we had a proper regulation of the sex industry, then there may be less trafficking of young women, many under age, from other countries.

On balance it should be legal and regulated. Why? If it is ignored it will still go on and results in disease, exploitation, people trafficking and abuse. Prostitutes are both men and women so you cannot divide it as some replies have done as exploiting only women. Importantly it should give real free choice to those involved by removing them from the clutches of pimps. The resources released by this should be re-used for tracking down and the prosecution of child abusers and sex offenders.

It is a difficult call this one, and while I would support legalisation and control I am not totally at ease with my decision but it might be better than what we have now.

I can't believe how many short sighted answers were given here by the girls!

Hey, surely it's ok, when men want to have sex and have no permanent partner to pay someone for it. Not all prostitutes are being exploited. It's actually quite popular to offer your services among some female students as it's an easy way to make money. I agree that crime, diseases and exploitation can only be properly tackled through legalisation. And let's face it, it's the oldest profession around. You won't be able to stop it anyway, whether it's legal or not! And I prefer men fulfilling their needs with a prostitute than in a dirty, pervert way somewhere else. THINK BEFORE YOU JUDGE, PLEASE!

Yep totally agree with Roza and Oph. I believe it should be legalized, where they can get rights and other privilages. It will also cut down on the sexual violence that is happening almost everywhere.

This way they can recieve a license and proper protection. Not every man or woman wants to be "trapped" forever. Also it will provide better regulation over the type of women that can recieve license and health benefits.

Like the person above said, prostitution has been around forever and will always be. Mind as well as keep it safe then ignore the issues and forget them. Because they won't go away.

I totally agree with Rozzy.

While it remains illegal, women and young girls remain at risk from sexually transmitted diseases, rape (and yes a prostitute CAN be raped) violence and drug abuse. Do those who say it is vile and disgusting thinnk that prostitution will EVER go away? Because it wont, it has always been around and always will be. It is a 'service', Many men visit prostitues for various reasons, some sordid, but some because of many many psycological or personal problems. Without prostitution I believe rape and sexual assault would rise, where these men just cannot confide or obtain sexual gratification via 'normal' means, some sex addicts who without the service of prostitution may really become a pest to women.

The safety of these women surely should come first. These women do you no harm, some simply feel they are left with no choice. If some bloke feels the need to visit a prostitute, how does that really affect you? It doesn't.

Anyone who 'goes to work,' carries with them to their place of employment, their body as well as their hands and mind (a package deal, so to speak). And as a result of this 'employment,' the employee is paid for their time - for being there (as that 'package deal') in body and mind, at least!

I cannot see much of a difference between the above and prostitution ....although the prostitute may only be there in body. And as such, is entitle to payment for her time.

There is the 'moral' argument, of course, but then, a person who is a Vegetarian could have the same moral argument about someone who works as a butcher or who sells meat, or fish.

Objecting to it and using the argument of 'Morality' in the past has not really changed a thing. So just why some continue spouting the same lines ....and seemingly not objecting to those girls, in the same moral tones, who are just about ''anyones'' after a skin-full and end up a total stinking mess as a result........

Yes it should be legalised.
If a person, male or female (lets not forget that not all prostitutes are women and not all punters are men) chooses to have sex with someone for money, so be it. If that's how they keep a rof over their head or food on the table, or what other things they choose to buy, that's there choice.

If a man or a women chooses to apy for sex, so what? it doesnt affect me, it doesnt affect you

the only reason people are being hurt is cos young girls are standing on street corners, being abused and controlled by a pimp and opening themselves up to all sorts of risk of violence and rape

if they were in a discreet brothel, they could acll for help if there was a problem; they could ensure 14 year olds werent sellnig their bodies, they could provide better health screening and make sure all the girls use protection

they dont judge you for what you get up to when your having sex, so why should you judge them?

oh, and if we tax their earnings, think how much extra money we could spend on preventative measures of helaping these peopel get into more "acceptable" jobs

yes...it should be regulated though

people say that it's perverted and immoral - that view is null and void, completely irrelevant - people should be able to do what they want with their own bodies. prostitution is an old, old profession and it will continue to exist for a long time; there will always be demand and people willing to do it. some people think of sex as a purely recreational act, and i'm one of these people. although i can't see myself turning to a prostitute, who am i to stop others? if two consenting adults want to have sex, and one them gets paid for it.....who gives a phuck?? if we regulate it the government can act as a pimp, so to speak, and take some of the profit itself - maybe the money can be invested in education :) also, regulation would lead to less STDS, less abuse (women being beaten up, raped, on the poverty line), it would cut out trafficking, cut out underage prostitution and lead to a more responsible attitude towards sex.

Yes I believe it should be legal and proberly policed as in STI screening etc.
Anything thatis forced underground will not go away simply because itis not accepted. The fact it exists proves the need and the requirement to acknowledge this by the authorities as a responsibility to society.

I'm always divided on this question...I think that if it is legalized, it should be regulated by the gov't, and laws should be strictly enforced to protect both the prostitutes and customers.
