road works?

Hi
Back in the 1970's Germany did all their roadwork’s at night to stop traffic jams.Some roads in particular by-pass roads could be done at night with out causing a nuisance to residents and could be made temporary ready for day time use. Even covering holes with steel sheets hence less traffic jams less pollution less anger and road rage so the money saved from police use etc would cover the extra wages. So has anybody got any idea as to why this not done?

Maybe because people are trying to sleep at night and probably wouldn't appreciate a pneumatic drill making a huge din outside their window (I know I wouldn't!)
Also, the amount of time it would take to temporarily make the road safe for traffic each day could be seen as counterproductive and would prolong the total time taken to complete the roadworks. OK, now I have re-read your question, properly this time (oops!) I see you have already covered the residential problem, but I see that one of the temporary solutions you suggest would be treacherous to motorbikes. Have you ever tried to ride a 2 wheeled vehicle over metal when it's wet? For eg, manhole covers in the rain? It's lethal. A whole sheet of metal would be like an ice rink.

Lots of reasons, cost (you wouldnt like the additional cost of doing all works at night added to your tax bill), environmental health reasons (noise is not permited above a certain level near residential properties at night), Material availability (plants that make tarmac concrete etc will only open at night for large orders and planning conditions may prevent them from doing so anyway), despite what the public think a lot of thought goes into when & how works are carried out and within health & safety rules etc the works are always done with minimum disruption. PS road workers have a high accident rate next time you are all driving through some slow down on average someone I have known has been killed every six years

what in the uk?
what a good idea, roadworks are such a burden when travelling down the motorway each morning and evening. the traffic is bad enough without roadworks as well.
a bit of advice - don't drive down the m27 (hampshire) in the morning, what a nightmare, worse than the m25
