im not very good with computer lingo and equally as bad with computers themself. i have a dell inspiron 1150 laptop and recently the cd drive stopped working. when i start up it would say could not find which im assuming means somehow it got uninstalled. obviously since it doesnt work i cant use a disc to fix anything so i was just wondering how i could get it working again without having to wipe my entire computer because i have many irreplaceable files that would be lost. please let me know how to go about this. thank you.

it doesnt get unistalled it just the way u trying to set it up there alot of diffrerent ways to do it but u have to know ur comp first but if u don't know then just contact me, wellllll first take it off the cd drive and the cables nowwww don't touch the inside of the cd drive, check the cables that that goes with the cd when u plug to the cd make sure is in right and not twisted some cables for the cd doesnt work only if it comes with the cd if u use another cable is not going to read anything and u need to know jump on the cd drive thats in the cd drive where u plug the cables if u see some pointing little metals on the cd check it . orrrrrrrrr if that doesnt work go to the command setup, just go to start press start and then run type in (cmd) a black screen will show up. the cd drive must be a master slave remember that ok moving on when the black screen shows up plug in your cd and the cables don't worry u wont get electrical shocks now

Heh,

This is very uncommon unless the lappy is old. You can go in the hardware profile and remove the drive from there, restart with the drive in and Windows should find it. If that doesn't fix the issue, replacing that drive is simple and low cost. Finding on on ebay is the best route.

There has even been malware that can make your CD drive disappear so make sure your system is free of Viruses, Spyware, and rootkits.

Either the disk drive got uninstalled or a wire is a little loose. Try opening your laptop disconnect the wires to the Drive and reconnect, if it doesnt recognize it still, i suggest you should Format your computer. Hope it helped
