Why does my generation, not all of my generation, but a lot of it, ignore the music that was so great when our parents were growing up, the music of the 60s? It's just something I'm wondering about because when I'm listening to that music, I hear more than just love songs, a lot of songs had depth, so it was just something I was wondering about.

I do listen to today's music, just not pop or hiphop, usually country. Don't get me wrong because I'm not bashing today's music. This is just something I was wondering.

From personal experience:

When i was a bit younger and fairly new to the rock-scene, i refused to listen to anything older than 90's music. I considered it all senseless and hippy-ish. As i got older though (i'm just 21 now by the way) i began to appreciate the classic stuff more and more. I began listening to Sabbath, Zeppelin, Queen, Beatles and even stuff like Jefferson Airplane, Clapton, Deep Purple and stuff like that. I guess if you are truly appreciative of music (like i'm practically obsessed with music), eventually you'll get to appreciate older genres (that is in fact where all the music today came from).

If you listen to bands like Tool today, eventually you'll start hearing the similarities to Pink Floyd. All of those English bands today (like The Vines and such) sound like The Beatles.

Personally i LOVE the classics these days. I'd listen to Johnny Cash, then Trivium, then Creedance, then Nirvana, then Slipknot and finally Blue Oyster Cult or The Doors. I think it's just based on the level of appreciation in the end. If you appreciate music enough you'd be willing to open your views to a broader spectrum and look into where it came from (if that makes any sense). Younger people these days (most of them) are more into the whole 'glam' and 'scene' of it all instead of actually lLISTENING to and appreciating the music itsself. That's my opinion anyway.

There are good artists out today. The only problem is that the Music companies are shoving the bubble gum pop and all the hip hop and rap they can put out, down our throats. In the 60's and 70's music was put out by artists. Do you think Janis Joplin would have made it in todays competition with Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson. Hell no. She doesn't have the look. She would be pushed to the back and only people who seek out that kind of music would know it and LOVE IT. As long as shows like American Idol are still on the air true artistry hasn't a chance in hell of making it.

One of the problems with fashion (not just music) is that it is "pushed" on us...and good taste/depth/meaning is not always required...

Just my opinion...
