According to this site, six women have sought the GOP or Democrat nominations since 1964, but none have succeeded. They are Margaret Chase Smith (Rep), Shirley Chisholm, Patsy Mink, Bella Abzug (all Dem), Elizabeth Dole (Rep), and Carol Moseley Braun (Dem). Victoria Woodhull and Belva Ann Lockwood ran as fringe candidates in the 19th century, before women could actually vote.

Geraldine Ferraro was the first woman to run - but it was for V.P. In her case, she pulled out before the race long before it went to vote because of all the dirt that was being pulled on her. When it became ugly, she pulled out.

The prediction is that Hillary Clinton will be the first woman to ever run for president.

Google it. I believe I've seen at least one on the ballot as a Presidential candidate for a third party.

I looked in my Political Science book but it doesn't list those candidates who got less than 1% of the popular vote.

No women have tried to run for President (that I know of). The only woman to run for Vice President was Ferraro.
