A dream is the experience of envisioned images, sounds, or other sensations during sleep. The events of dreams are often impossible or unlikely to occur in physical reality, and are usually outside the control of the dreamer, (except in the case of lucid dreaming, in which the suspension of disbelief is broken and the dreamer realizes that he or she is dreaming—being sometimes even capable of changing the oneiric reality around him or her and controlling various aspects of the dream).[citation needed] Dreamers may experience strong emotions while dreaming. Frightening or upsetting dreams are referred to as nightmares. Episodic evidence also exists for precognitive dreams. The scientific discipline of dream research is oneirology.
Dreams have a long history both as a subject of conjecture and as a source of inspiration (artistic or otherwise). Throughout history, people have sought meaning in dreams. They have been described physiologically as a response to neural processes during sleep, psychologically as reflections of the unconscious, and spiritually as messages from God or predictions of the future (oneiromancy).
Most scientists believe that almost all humans dream with approximately the same frequency. Even those who rarely recall dreams report having them if awakened during REM sleep, which is observed in a veriety of animals, while some species do not dream at all [citation needed].
In antiquity, dreams were thought to be part of the supernatural world, and were seen as messages from the gods. It was common for leaders to take dream-oracles to battles to receive their advice and guidance. [citation needed]
Likewise, the Torah (known in Christianity as the first 5 books of the Old Testament) and Koran both tell the same story of Joseph, who was given the power to interpret dreams and act accordingly. Some sources also state that like Joseph, many other prophets were described to have a stronger affinity to interpret the images in their dreams to lead the people around them.[citation needed]
This continued into the Early Middle Ages. A story from Nevers, which is reproduced in the Golden Legend, states that one night the Emperor Charlemagne dreamed that he was saved of dying from a wild boar during a hunt. He was saved by the appearance of a child, who had promised to save the emperor from death if he would give him clothes to cover his nakedness. The bishop of Nevers interpreted this dream to mean that he wanted the emperor to repair the roof of the cathedral dedicated to the boy-saint Saint Cyricus.
In the Later Middle Ages, dreams were seen as temptations from the Devil, and thus were seen as dangerous.
However in India, scholars such as Charaka (300 BC) gave alternative explanations for the reasons behind dream. In Charaka Samhita, the explanation of dreams is as follows : "The cause of dreams are seven. They are what you have seen, heard, experienced, wish to experience, forced to experience, imagined and by the inherent nature of the body".

One theory is Freud's psychoanalytic perspective which suggests dreams are the unconscious desires being brought to the surface during sleep. Everyone dreams everytime they experience REM sleep. The content of your dreams is divided into two categories; Manifest and Latent. The Manifest content is the concrete details, events, the physical aspects of the dream. The Latent content is the hidden meaning of your dream.
Another possible explanation is the Activation-Synthesis Theory which proposes dreams are a result of neurons being fired in the brain during sleep which causes events to happen at random.
It's up to you to decide what your dreams mean.

Dreams are from subconscious mind, or brain activities workign at night. Yes, dreams have meanings. They reflect our inner personalities, fear, desire. They are triggered by our, actual events, media effects. Some are just merely play back of what we experienced in day time.
As far as future events go, most of the time it has no effect. Some claims it can premonitor, but I think 99% are from the past, not for the future.

we dream during sleep is just because our mind is not in complete rest.It should be given rest after the hectic work during the day. some times your dream really means something to the future, for example:if you keep thinking about the exam which you wrote today before you go to sleep the marks that appear might be the real marks in the reality. So always sleep with a positive taught..........

dreams occur during our REM stage of sleep. no one really knows why they should occur, but there are many logical answers. dreams are mostly based on the activities and incidents that occur in our day to day activities. the unique nature of the brain is the way it connects many different incidents into one episode of dream, just like our hindi movies!!!! well some incidents that are dreamt off do occur in reality; this is probably because either our sixth sense knows about it already or it may be because of some extra ordinary perceptive capability of the brain, which is yet to be deciphered by mankind. infact doctors or researchers have not even discovered 5% of the higher mental functions of the human brain!!!!! ofcourse you can also have dreams in your day time when you are lazy enough!!!!!! well in general most of our dreams have little significance if ones mental status is normal.

I've written several essays on that very subject. Dreams are reflections of anticipations, emotions, events, or what you ate before bed. Dreams do not tell the future, just a unique reflection of the past.

We dream because our brain tries to store and rememebr the past day while we are sleeping. It keeps working while we we rest. Basically, if you were tired today because you worked way too much and suddenly go to sleep exhausted chances are you will dream about work. This is so because you have not fully gotten your mind out of work..
Dreams are nothing but dreams... But it all depends how you understand your dream and how you put it into motion. :)

i think that this is something that varies by person in opinions, but to me i think that dreams can be used to work things out in ones mind and to help solve problems in the day...maybe also something for us to be able to think about...a dream can give someone inspiration or very strong feelings after awaking. Dreams can be used as passage ways to the future i believe. if u have ever experienced awaking from a dream and having the feeling that you ate, did, or touched something in real life, it could be something to remind u of what u are looking for and what to keep alert for...that´s it for me,
xao:)

Not all dreams are omens. Most of them are replays of things that have happened to us. But there are some which may serve as warnings or indications of what will happen in the future, that is if you know how to differentiate and interpret them.
