I'm not too sure what you said, but your best bet may be to reinstall windows. This solves many speed problems.

Also try checking for spyware with spybot.

it's ddr at 266 mhz [pc 2100] :P not cpu speed. and 6 item's in systray might be a lot depends on what aplications ur using. U probably instaled some program like antivirus that works hard during ur windows booting. A clean windows would help u. Or ur saying about hardware problems .. like waiting for ur computer to boot from ur hdd?

Sometimes certain hardware will run better with matching brands of memory, also generic RAM can hinder the performance. You may try to remove the RAM upgrade and see if the boot time changes.

You could also have a malware issue that is causing a slow boot time. Making sure your system is clean of viruses, spyware and the like will give you a more stable system and faster.

Program like AVG Free and Ad-aware Personal are good free choices to control this.

what I'm wondering is how you got windows xp to install on a 266MHz computer
anyhow if you change your performance settings for max performance you will see some difference
here's how
assuming you have an icon on your desktop that says "my computer"
right click on "my computer", click on properties, this will bring up the system properties page, click on advanced tab.
on that tab you will see a performance selection, click "settings".
here if you click the box for best performance your windows visual settings will all be real generic like windows 2000, so i recommend clicking custom settings and uncheck every box in that group except the last four at the bottom, that way it will still look the same but speed up everything alittle.

good luck

Get a program to clean your registry. There are several out there. Registry Mechanic is quite easy to use.
