Democratic institutions need to have some form of voting where all members have a say in what decisions are made. There also needs to be a multiple leadership system that can balance the power so not one person is running the whole show.

An institution cannot be democratic if it has power and authority over any individual.

Thus a democratic institution is an oxymoron.

True democracy cannot by definition have a representative government which would also yeild power which creates a body which has power and infuence - not equitable power spread in the hands of the people.

The only true democracy is 'direct democracy' - google it for a definition.

They are rule-based structures that facilitates democratic consolidation. They are so key that no genuine democratization effort can survive without. They also constitute the machinery that drives democratization process. These include political parties that are all inclusive with internal democracy, a parliament that is autonomous with effective legislative and oversight powers, a judiciary that is actually the hope of the common man and many more. the term usually refers to those institutions that underpin and support democracy like rule of law under independent courts, Democracy is a form of government in which all eligible citizens are meant to participate equally – either directly or, through elected representatives, indirectly – in the proposal, development and establishment of the laws by which their society is run. Democratic institutions, the institutions that support democracies – courts that uphold equality before the law, legislatures that safeguard human rights, and universal suffrage -- need time to build the capacity for stable governance.

I agree to Dana partially though. I feel democratic Institution are those procedural aspects exercised in democratic politics of a state that underpins the informed decision by the majority of the citizens to govern.

I agrre with Dana. In Nigeria it must include the institution that conducts the elections, it must be independent enough to ensure that each eligible voter casts his/her vote unmolested. then add law enforcement agencies without which rule of law is meaningless. One cannot have democracy in any form without the ruls of law.
