Because you are being controlled.
Congratulations! The first step of breaking free is to realize that you are in chains.
Now... you can either choose to do something about that, or you can continue being manipulated.
If you still continue to feel like you are being controlled, it will be because you haven't yet made strong enough of an effort to free your mind. Only you can make that choice.

To quote Aristotle, man is a political animal. Modern scientist would say a social animal. That means you can never have complete freedom from your fellow human beings. By your very nature, you are bound to them. There are cases of hermits living apart from society, but these are exceptions, and not the rule.
So society has to a balance between the liberty of the individual, the collective will, and the liberty of those individuals which would rather limit liberties.
In modern society, with its modern media and big, organized corporations, the line between the collective will and the bending of liberty by the few becomes blurred. Corporate America (and corporate Europe, corporate Japan, etc...) have no other purpose than to make us consume. They are also in control of big media and of lobbyists perverting democratic institutions. Publicity has become the way in which these agents exert control over the culture. This constant propaganda of the consumerist state has been found to be much more efficient than physical coercion.
In my view, this will be the great battle of the XXIst century: To wrest control of the cultures we live in away from a corporate elite bent on nothing but self-aggrandizement.
A good first step for the individual is to reground oneself with the true culture of the west: The classics. Our culture is being completely ignored, for the most part, to the profit of a garbage view of the world where the individual is not expected to reflect, and is expected to feel only what a product makes them feel.

I'd give up. Come to the dark side. The only options against the machine are comic. Better to accept the paradigm, sooner. Instead of suffering a vaguely reactionary post for sub-living-wages for a cause that will always fail. Resistance is overrated when you end up being a complicit supporter everyday of your life anyway. Just accept you're barely an extra in an out of control, multi-trillion dollar movie. The best you can hope for is to command respect in between takes. C'est la vie. After you eat dirt your mouth will taste clean.
Otherwise, you'll be the lone protester
standing in front of the bulldozer
when it just runs you over
and nobody could care less.

yes in the society we have developed our freedom has always been clamped down on. but without this restriction how could we ever move towards anything else. right now there are things you would really want to do but can't. This can be frustrating but look at it from this perspective. If you could do anything you wanted or have anything you wanted wouldn't the meaning of those things start to dwindle. Your fulfillment in life when things do go your way would no longer exist as you would have nothing left to fulfill, no challeges to overcome, and no losses to compare with victories.

You're being controlled, but not by man. Man is controlled by money, at least in America. So... you're not a slave to another man, you're a slave to a piece of paper.

Well, if you feel controlled, let yourself go, and do whatever you want to do.. Who's going to stop you?
