a 396 is a big block. its basically the same block as a 454, just a tad smaller bore and stroke.
you would have to change both heads. not knowing what the chamber volume is, the valve size, peanut port, oval port, rectangular port, etc ,etc of each head could screw things up.

a 454 is a big block and a 396 is a small block they wont work at all. Un less you can make up an adapter

No, More than liekly the port size is bigger on 454 and won't line with gasket Also there is what's called open chamber design on the 454 your compresion ration on that bank would be far lower. Buy the how to hot rod big block chevys book

yeah probably run poorly too , also i wonder if the 454 had steam holes like the 400 small block, get the book .
