well basically, Sam leaps into 1953 in a bar where 'God' is a bartender and a young Al. In the bar there are various other people he met during his leaps. Sam figures out he's got to put Al on the straight and narrow and get him together with the girl, who thought that Al had died, when he was in Vietnam. He sorts Al out, therefore altering Al's future, so in theory we are supposed to assume that Al was never Sam's guardian. So Sam just leaps again but disappears. Bit of a bad ending to such a great series!!

The final episode was in fact intended to be an end-of-season cliffhanger, but after the series was not renewed by the network, it was re-edited to function as the series finale. This may account for some of its ambiguous nature. The original ending has Sam leaping into 1969 a mere minute or two after he and Al leapt out in the episode "M.I.A", to tell Al's first wife, Beth, that Al is coming home. His Vietnam-era picture begins to "leap" (this is where the final episode cuts off), and then we see a modern picture of Al sitting with Beth and their four daughters. This ending somehow made it out of the studio and has been circulated on the Internet. In the ending that was actually broadcast, we are told that Al was reunited with Beth, that they remain married, and that "Dr. Sam Becket [sic] never returned home." Fans have speculated that this would have erased Project Quantum Leap, Sam and Al's relationship, or even Sam himself from the altered timeline; however, the original script and subsequent statements by Bellisario leave all of these intact.

Sam never got home. He ended up in a bar talking to god and found out that god was controlling his leaps. and Al and his wife got back together and lived happily ever after. It was a great show...it sucked that the Friends generation cancelled it.

i appreciate quantum bounce - it replaced into one of those tremendous instruct, and to me it extremely confirmed what a very good actor Scott Bakula is - after all, maximum actors play one personality for a lengthy time period, then yet another, etc. He can be a clean personality each and each and every week and do it tremendous! i replaced into very disillusioned by the ending of the instruct although... i can manage them cancelling it, existence is going on, yet how they ended it replaced into terrible! once you're gonna end it, then end it, do not go away adverse sam in limbo like that!

In the final episode, Sam Beckett met the one who was moving him around to right the wrongs and was told he could go home anytime he wanted. But the guy wouldn't tell him how so Sam never got to go home.

He ended up stuck in the body of a woman with huge guzzumbas so it worked out all right in the end.

He met God. Seriously. God told him that he was part of a bigger plan and that he was being directed all along. It is assumed he kept leeping.
