I plan on buying a hd tv very soon. I plan to use this mainly for games on my xbox 360. I usually sit approximately 48 to 50 inches from my current 20 inch lcd screen.
My question is, would a 26, 32 or 40 inch screen be to big to play on?
What do you think is the optimum size tv for this set up?

The 40" might be a little too big, but the 26" and the 32" are just fine. I would recommend the 26", because I think when you are sitting less than 5 feet away the 32" and above might start to hurt your eyes. But if you can sit 6 or 7 feet away the 32" is your best bet.

I have a PS2 with an HDMI hookup to my Mitsubishi 57" screen, and I love it. However, I sit about 7-8 feet away from the screen.

Most of the TV deals out there are on the sub-38" screens. If you could suffer with a tube television instead of an LCD, you could get a great deal, but it would lack portability for certain.

You might think that a 40" screen would be too large to play in front of, but I bet that's not the case - especially once you start playing. My buddies that do quite a bit of gaming purchased the ViewSonic 37" HDTV widescreens from Gateway (upgrading from the 21" gaming consoles they had) and love them, but they also paid about $700.

I would recommend that you take your console to a local television dealership/specialty store and hook it up, sit the distance you normally would and decide that way. That will ensure you get exactly what you want.

When you decide to purchase, overstock.com has some occassional great deals, AND you're coming into the right season for the new models to be released for holidays, so prices should come down on the older models.

One question for you though - how do you decide if you sit the extra 2" from the screen (48-50") :-)

Good Luck!

To get the best out the 360, I'd say to stick with a minimum of 32 inches. Everyone loves a huge telly, but a more important factor is how far way you'll be sat. Apparently the ideal distance is two and a half times the size of the screen. so your current arrangement is pretty much bang on!! But a 32 inches is going to give you the impact you'd be looking for from a hdtv.

We have a 32" LCD HD TV that we use with the 360 and its really good. You have to consider price and how much you want to spend. If you can afford it I'd go for a decent make and 40" but if you want to get a lesser model go for the smaller size screen.

You have to decided between space you have for your new TV and money you want to spend for HDTV.
But big is good! Good luck!
