They put us onto one bill without either of us knowing it. Her meal was free because she had a coupon. But i had to pay full price for mine. Where we ate if you have a college id you get a percentage off. Why wouldn't they let me use anything for mine?

first of all, if you're sitting at the same table, it is your responsibility (since you're the one paying) to make sure the server knows if you want separate bills.
if her meal was free because she had a coupon, what kind of coupon was it? was it a buy one meal get one free? in that case, she should pay for half of the bill since she ate half of the food.
if she had a coupon that entitled her to a complimentary meal, then she is not required or obliged to give you anything.
if you want a percentage off because you're a college student, again the server is not psychic and you should have let him/her know up from that you had a discount eligibility. it probably says right on the card or its user agreement that you're supposed to clarify things up front, before service. it's best to do that all the time anyway. when you make assumptions, you have to be prepared to pay for any errors, because after all they are your errors.
your friend should have paid half your meal no matter what, just to be ethical if not friendly. seems like someone not really worth your time

Coupons are the restaurants way of enticing new business through the door. But, there are people who abuse the coupons at the business owners expense.Every coupon I've ever seen has liimitations to it. Most say one coupon or discount per ticket. To you, you think of yourself as a ticket. In the restaurant world, the ticket consists of all the meals that go out to the table.I would encourage you to go back to the restaurant, and use your coupon or discount for the next meal you have there. And remember that the restaurant owner was gracious enough to extend that discounted price simply because you are a student, in hopes that you'll continue doing business with them.

Did you ask for separate checks? Duh!

Furthermore, the restaurant may have a policy regarding more than one discount and/or coupon per party or table, regardless of whether or not you ask for separate checks. Most of them do. And the coupon should have had disclaimers stating "limit one coupon per party/table per visit" and/or "coupon cannot be used in conjunction with other discounts or offers."

Sure restaurants want to use enticements to motivate people to patronize the restaurant, but they cannot have a "free-for-all" regarding coupons and discounts; that's how restaurants close down (well, one way, anyway).

Did you ask for separate checks? The coupon usually states only one coupon/discount per party or per person. Servers serve food not read minds.

You should have asked for seperate checks upfront and if they refused to let you have seperate checks, the polite thing to do would have been to split the bill 3 ways if all your meals were of comparable price.

Yeah? Seems normal. You sat at one table, you got one check. There was one coupon, you got one meal free.

What exactly were you expecting?
