I recieve my prescriptions through the mail and yesterday I got my Depo Birth Control, It came in a syringe, ready to be injected so not wanting to go into the doctors office I just did it myself. Now my boyfriend is freaking out thinking i'm going to die, I was just wondering if anyone can tell me if there is any reason I should not have done it myself.!

I've had this shot many times before, I know where it needs to go.

Also, I am menstruating, But almost instantly when I gave myself the shot, my period stopped. I never did have it while I was on the Depo Shot.

Well unless you are a nurse its pretty dim! You could end up with an infection and be very ill. Where did you inject, did you even consider the damage you could do by putting it in the wrong place and hitting a blood vessel or nerve?
But you wanna take chanches...go ahead. I wouldnt DIY and I AM a nurse!

There are many things that could go wrong with this. You could hit a nerve and become paralyzed. You could have injected it into a vein, depo is not meant to be taken intravenously. You could be pregnant, if you were late in getting the shot, and the depo would harm your baby. Normally most people don't have their period while on depo, so a pregnancy test is a good idea. It could become infected if you did not use proper technique. There are certain areas that are safe to inject, and they teach us these things in nursing school. Especially if you did it in the buttocks, the risk of hitting a nerve and becoming paralyzed is great. Also, you need to know how deep to inject it, how to make sure you were not in a vein, etc. That's what medical professionals are for. You should go see a doctor, get checked out and get a pregnancy test, and never, ever do anything like this again.

I know this is an old post, but people like me may be taking a look at it. First of all, it is NOT uncommon to get depo via the mail these days. That is how it is sent to me. Secondly, a lot of people give the injection to themselves. I recently had a nurse give me my depo, and she gave it to me wrong (did not go deep enough), so even nurses who are trained in this kinda thing can mess up if they have never given a depo before.

The first question is are you menstruating right now? Are you certain you are not pregnant? You're suppose to receive the first shot either during or right after your period or after a documented negative pregnancy test. The second question would be did you give it in the muscle tissue of either your hip or your upper arm? Maybe you are a nurse and already know these things? Those 2 criteria are probably the most important. You should receive your 2nd injection in 12 weeks.

It takes specific training to learn to administer injections. To be specific, I think that Depo needs to be given deep IM(intramuscular) in a large muscle which is why it is best administered in the buttocks. The risk of not giving it properly is extremely high, specifically there is a chance of injection in to a vein which could be extremely dangerous.

So no, you should not have given yourself the injection and I hope that you will not do so again in the future. I also have to wonder why they would send you such a thing in the mail.

Yes. It is an intramuscular injection, and if you do not inject it deep enough, or in the wrong place, you could get pregnant. Better to find a neighbor who is a nurse like I did, or take the time to go to the doc.

As long as you made sure there wasn't any air in the syringe you should be fine. Diabetics inject themselves all the time. Tell the bf to chill. Maybe he needs a little release to calm him down. Give him some.

Because do you know if the medicine needed to go into a vein, an aterty or just into the muscle? If you put it in the wrong place, it will not be effect at all and can actually cause damage.
