You can always go the gift certificate route. Maybe a subscription to a ski or surf magazine.

Does he play poker? Maybe a Texas Hold 'Em set or nice poker chip set.

Do the "Over-the-Hill" gift basket:

Think along lines like,..... Geritol (vitamins for old folks), Ben-Gay (which he can use after extreme sports anyway,..... hearing aid batteries, rent or borrow a can or a walker from somebody,.... package of "depends", Postum instead of coffee,..... Walk thru the health/medical aid aisle of the drug-store.... lots of ideas there..... a magazine for "the golden years" - some drug/pharmacy stores have them for free - or from Sr. Rec Centre..... pick up an application form for free - so he can apply to the Seniors Lodge in your area (it is usually free to pick up or down-load the application form)....

Bundle this basket up nice, tie a few black balloons to it,..... may be find a vulture or RIP headstone left over from Halloween,..... Party stores have tons of Over-The Hill cards, black, vultures, etc,.... Oh Yeah,.... a small bottle of jelly-beans and label them "Geezer Pills" - Take one as needed to ....... (eg: be able to see as far as your bifocals),.......... Have fun with it!!!!

Last but not least - if you can't find a Over the Hill card,......... find a Sympathy Card!

40 is when life comes together and there is a sense of understanding for many like there never was before.

In keeping with this theme, get him a good book to read. I suggest something with some important things about life. The celestine prophecy might be a good read for him. It is written by James Redfield.

On a humorous note, get him the latest janet jackson cd. There is a section on it that says, "Pull insert here"... when women do that, their right boob falls out... (joke, tell him that, and all the women who see it)...
