The stores are selling hope to the customers who are hoping they'll look better with the makeup on. :-)

I would say it is an accurate commentary on reality versus clever marketing. Really, they are selling you an "idea" and if you like the idea (for example that you will look better and feel sexier if you use this wrinkle cream) you will buy the product.
