If you are going to have a family together and are committed to the goal of raising children together, then getting married makes a lot of sense. Financially, marriage means that one partner can work and provide health insurance for the whole family... so the other partner can stay at home with children or work part-time and still have health benefits. If you are married you can legally buy a house together and receive tax cuts. Also, you both share custody of the children equally... but otherwise some agreement must be made as to which parent will take care of the children. Also, marriage and commitment to having one family, one wife, one husband provides a stable and reliable and consistent environment in which kids can thrive. Kids need stability, and marriage can provide that. On the other hand, a bad and unstable marriage can upset that.

Anyway... those are a bunch of really logical reasons why people want to marry. On the other more emotional side of it, many people believe in the religious vows they take and seriously want to marry one partner for life... or even not religious... just many people really believe in the promise they make to the person they love and want to have a family with.
