That it will be hard for any elected leader to get alot of support in the future, because every move they make is scrutinized and analyzed, all on these 24 hour news programs, the internet and the like? Your thoughts on whether, because of these things, we'll ever have an overwhelmingly popular president again?

I think that massive variety of media allows people to find news that fits their preconceived belief system. Especially the internet. Michael Moore uses real articles, but fails to note they were retracted for example.

You raise a good point. In the past, much of popularity was based on the overall picture, without looking at a lot of details. That's not possible anymore.

But there are two things going on that factor into the equation. The first is the amount of coverage, and potentially any spin or bias that gets put into it. The amount means that people are paying more attention to details, and the spin means they are forming the conclusions that the media wants them to.

The second, and more important, factor is partisanship. The tendency to label someone or something, and then hate or love the label rather than the individual. As long as people are hating or loving the label (the political party) it's hard to form consensus.

I saw a film of an Interview with Harold Macmillan. One of the things I remember is he said. Television News has forced the leaders of the world into becoming idiots. They want an instant reply for every thing that happens.

He went on to say Churchill would spend days deliberating over issues before giving a decision. Gone are the days of wisdom.

It could happen.

I see benefits to the varied sources of media, particularly the Internet.

Currently the Internet is the least bias but that can change if there is a governing body who censors the information.

That is a distinct possibility as governments become more and more aware of how powerful access is to information.

BTW that is already being proposed.

I think we will have a overwhelmingly supported President again.
Either in 2008 or after everyone wakes up to the very real threat of Radical Islam.

Or we won't have ANY President at all.

Yes, I think it's very possible that we'll have popular presidents again. We just need to have better candidates to vote for.

I think that America will be known around the globe as the nation that likes to impeach its presidents.

All of these libs crying about world opinion might want to give this a thought.
