I do not use make up very often, so I usually have my products for a pretty long time. Since I buy clinique, I cannot afford to be replacing them every x amount of weeks, so could anyone explain me if using old make up is bad for you, and why?

Thanks!

It might be bad for your skin, but that will depend on a few variables. Your makeup contains preservatives that should keep unfriendly organisms from affecting it for a couple of years, but you must use and store it properly, especially if you use it only occasionally. It would be best if you did not use your fingers to get it out of the container, as your skin is likely to have bacteria on it. Use a cotton swab, a foundation brush or a plastic spatula. The latter two should be washed after each use. Also, keep the makeup package closed tightly. That might sound silly, but I have seen people who leave bottles of makeup open on their bathroom counters. Yuck!
If, after your best efforts, your makeup were to "turn", you would have an off-odor as your first clue, followed by a change in the texture, becoming either clumpy or runny. If you use "expired" makeup, you probably won't get the even application you are used to and you might even notice some irritation, especially if you exfoliate aggressively, which could create tiny scratches on the skin surface, into which the bacteria could settle. Unless you are really hooked on Clinique, there are some very good options in drug stores these days and companies like CVS allow you to return any cosmetic product with which you are not happy, as long as you have the receipt and it is within a reasonable timeframe. Give Revlon or Cover Girl a try.

Total lies! Take your makeup off at the end of the day, use a cleanser and toner and use moisturiser. And (I can't stress this enough) DO NOT keep your make up for longer than half a year or 8 months top, bacteria form and can ruin in and then infect your skin, hence forming spots. And wahs your makeup brushes all the time, I do mine at least every two weeks. Look at woman like Marcia Cross, she's in her 50's (I think) and she looks great (she has no botox) and she says she's like that because she uses a SPF everyday - which you should even in winter - and takes her makeup off. If you are worried about some of the chemicals that are in makeup (I won't lie to you, there are LOADS especially in some of the cheaper brands) then try organic products which are equally good but sometime cost more. Hope this helped!

Chemicals in makeup compounds change and alter themselves over a period of time. Therefore, when applied to skin following a reasonable period of time, say three to six months, the freshness of the chemicals have changed thereby increasing the opportunity to cause damage to the skin. When makeup is used over and over again the bacteria from your body is mixed into the makeup compound off your fingers. Over a period of time, by introducing body bacteria to the makeup compound that is naturally changing its own chemcial and organic orgins, the end product becomes, well...pretty gross.

old make-up can cause really icky skin conditions. ones i'm relatively sure you don't want. so toss the old stuff and read on!

try buying something cheaper, such as almay if you have allergies to certain make-ups. the make-up in drug stores isn't much different than the make-up you'll find in department stores. it's more affordable and more easily replaceable. if you don't use it very often switching to almay or another brand shouldn't hurt your skin.

yes, of course, every make-up has the own date expiration...
and for several types like mascara and lipstick it wasn't good after few months...
Well, the solutions is if you're not too often wear make-up, please buy the small size...it wouldn't waste your money...
Take care of there's something weird with tha make-up stuff...the smell, colour or shape...
Don't try to wear an old make-up...it could make a serious irritation or something worst in your skin..

its bad. restock u're eyeshadow every few months or so, mascara the same, blush i think around every 4 months, and make sure to wash it off every night, it can do really weird things to your skin and eyes if u don't. Oh, eyeliner, probably one month restocking, and if u can't afford it, well then just don't use eyeliner cause it does bad stuff if u keep it on past the expiry date

Yes...as far as mascara goes. It has bacteria on it. You should replace it every so often.

yes. you should change your make-up every six months because moisture and your natural oils get mixed in with your make up when you use them and bacteria grows.
