2.4Mountain Railways - Welcome over the clouds
Mountain journeys are possible in charming little trains, from the plains up and above the clouds, passing little hamlets and over spectacular landscapes at a leisurely pace. The most famous of the little trains is in Eastern India, from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling on a 2 ft. gauge. This is now a World Heritage Site. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, in Southern India, from Mettupalayam to Ooty is also a World Heritage site. Simla, the erstwhile summer capital of India is linked with Kalka by a narrow gauge train crossing over 100 tunnels and lofty arched bridges. North India also has the Kangra Valley Railway linking Pathankot with Joginder Nagar. In Western India, near Mumbai, the Matheran Light Railway links Neral to Matheran.

northeastbengal, chirapunji railways is the first mountain railway. konkan railway is very good.
