its a automatic honda civic 92 lx. Electronic speedometer no cable to it.

it could be a bad twitchenator.
a make, model, and year might help with a guess at a diagnosis. ;)

all the other answers are good ones but how about the speedo gear it might be missing a tooth or two making the lag in the cable you can pull it out of your tranny an insect that really easily. More easily then pulling out the gages and lubing a cable....but if your going to do that make sure the cable goes into the back of the Gage tightly. And if you don't see a cable then you have a stepper motor and then it really kinda gets complicated.

The speedometer cable is probably worn out. Or the speed sensor is bad

if the car has a speedo cable instead of electronic then the cable needs lubing,it has to be pulled out of the casing an lubed,if its electronic it may have a bad stepper motor or sensor,which would have to be diagnosed for you

i own a repair shop,and it would have helped if you had given a little more info on the type of vehicle it is that makes a big difference in the answer you might get,good luck,i cant really answer this one that good.

Cable needs lube or replacement.

It probably needs to be lubricated. This would be especially true if it does it more when the weather is cold.
