Seven southern states withdrew from the Union between the time of his election and his inauguration. the different 4 states withdrew from the Union before everything gunfire some months later.

They new he was against slavery. He was chosen by the Republicans who were against slavery. He wanted to preserve the Union first but they never gave him a chance. South Carolina seceeded from the Union followed by about 7 other states.

Let me think... this is a real tough one... it's not like there was a war started over his election, or anything like that ....

Um, I'm gonna have to guess that they didn't really notice, and the timing of the Civil War was just kind of a coincidence.
