Kindness can only really be measured by the recipient. It's not solely dependent on what is in the heart of the giver. Sure the giver may want some acknowledgment in return but, the taker is or should be the one who really derives it's benefit. Otherwise it's a selfish act by the giver. When both giver and taker are aligned then it's a spiritual moment.

Kindness: anyone can extend a kindness. It's not that hard to do. There are degrees to which people are willing to extend an act of kindness in most cases, and therefore to measure it, one needs to be able to judge the true selflessness and the many good deeds of a person's life to really know the true extent that one is "kind".

It is really evident and transparent when one is truly kind. It's just a quality that exists, that does not judge, that has compassion, and one extends it without any kind of expectation in return. It's a way of life that one chooses, and in turn, their lives become enriched because they know their kindness will sew seeds of gratitute and in turn enrich or brighten up a life that may have been faltering or in the dark.

A recipient would measure an act of kindness with the gratitude they feel after being extended it, but the ultimate measure of true kindness is when we can learn to "pass it forward" and through receiving a kindness from someone, we too become transformed by the strength and selflessness that act took, and in turn extend it too, and therefore learn the many rewards of living a better life in kindness, a quality that is very admirable and God-like.
