are from Microsoft? Do they sell spyware programs for other people to place on your computer, or do they place them there themselves? Also, what is the purpose of a data miner, does it steal passwords or just track what pages you visit on the web, or something else?

Microsoft does not put spyware or viruses onto your system. A "data miner", usually found with the use of Ad-Aware Se Personal, is traces of a very low level cookie that is tracking what web page you visisted. They are harmless an will not steal your data. (Sounds like you have http://www.lavasoft.com installed as they are good with "data miner", finding in scan.

When you open msn or yahoo, or anything on IE, you are going to get a cookie. (Usually these cookies are good an only help to open the webpage quicker.). Once you go outside into the WWW, you will pick up alot of bad cookies that track you are can steal your data.

Here is a really good free program in all languages and has frequent updates. Comes with default or you can set your own defaults. Plus all new versions are free.

I use this program in two computers to clean my tracks.

http://www.ccleaner.com (We call it the "CRAP CLEANER".

The two most common forms of data miners are data mining programs that an organization uses to analyze its own data to look for significant patterns, and spyware programs that are uploaded to a user’s computer to monitor the user’s activity and send the data back to the organization, typically so that the organization can send the user targeted advertising.
