you would need to know what model of viao you have, since the ram will be RIMM(A RIMM is a form of memory connection much like a SIMM or DIMM. RIMMs are physically different from the others and cannot be used on a BX chipset motherboard. RIMM stands for Rambus Inline Memory Module. RDRAM comes in RIMMs.)
they are very easy to install remove a screw from the bottom of the laptop, and snap the new ram in.

you have to know what ram your computer can use because there are different types like DDR or DDR2 and the newest one that will come out is the DDR3. watch out because if you put in hte wrong one.. it will kill you computer...
also it depends how much RAM your motherboard can support like some can only support 2GB or 4GB.

while purchasing the computer, the manual also come with it....in the manual.....it shows and describes which cpu and how much upto MHzu can iit supportsin the motherboard and which type of RAM.through the manual u will get the solution tht u want.
