You have a point, but when the SW became part of (or was stolen into) the United States, it inherited the pre-existing holidays and celebrations.

But Cinco de Mayo is honored and celebrated all over the US, even if it only means Happy Hour pricing on margueritas in Maine.

They don't. We celebrate it because on July 4th, 1776 the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence claiming out freeom from Britain and becoming our own country so we could trade with other countries and build up our own armies and make our own laws and form of government

Who's stopping you? Incidentally, don't we celebrate many cultural observances that we are not a part of? We celebrate Halloween, but not all of us are Catholic. We celebrate St. Patrick's Day, but not all of us are Irish. My atheist friend has a Christmas tree in her house every year. So celebrate whatever you want to! That's one of the freedoms of being an American!

Because parts of the southwest became part of the US after the USA was formed. Now that they are part of US they celebrate our independence. Mexico's independence from spain is Mexico's independence day not ours.

No. As US citizens, we celebrate the founding of our government. The beginning of our independence. As a US citizen , I resent the celibration of Cinco de Mayo or any other non-US celebration. They have nothing to do with this country.
