Your wireless router sends the signal as far as it can, anyone with a wireless card can pick up that signal if they are within it's range. If you do not want them to piggy back off your wireless internet you will have to access your router and encrypt the signal coming out of it so that no other computer except yours will understand it's signal. To access the router click the start button and click the run option. From there type in cmd. A black window will pop up, In that window type ipconfig and hit enter. Look for where it says "Default Gateway" Type that number that it gives you into your internet explorer address bar and it will open your router. From there you can encrypt your wireless signal. Be sure to put the password it gives you into your computers that are using wireless or you will not be able to access your own internet once you encrypt it.

Yes the best way to prevent this is two use WAP encryption which requires a key on the computer that is trying to connect to the router. You can also use MAC address filtering so that only known MAC addresses are allowed to connect to the router. Another good security measure is to not advertise your SSID from the router to the outside world that way only those who know the SSID will be allowed to connect.

Yes. If the SSID is transmitted then any wireless enabled device can detect the network, and if you haven't turned on a network password then anyone can access your router. The manual should tell you how to log in to the router to change these settings.

Yes they can piggyback if they are in range and:

1) The network is open (no security enabled)

or

2) Your network requires a security key for access, and they have it (perhaps you gave it to them awhile back)

You can do other things like turning off the SSID to prevent people from seeing your network when they browse, but as long as you've enabled either WEP or WPA encryption, you're probably fine.

IF it is unsecured then yes.. you need to set up your wep key.. wireless encryption protocal.. you need to go to dos type ipconfig hit enter. it will give you the ip and gateway.. write the gate way down .. always a 192 number.. type that number to your browser and hit enter.. from there you will see the wep somewhere depending on your router. set it up and enter the same code in setup on the wireless computers that way no one else can use it with out the code. Yes as long as they have a wireless and it's setup correctly. If you're talking about w/o your permission, yes, if they know how. That is why I don't like W/L, like anything that is sent in the air waves anyone can get it. I ALWAYS use wired but it is harder because of running wire.

Yes, if you don't want them to, you have to encrypt it. The instructions that came with your router will tell you exactly how to do it.
