Sounds like a broken installation. You may have some luck with the Avast uninstall utility - get it here
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

as Puraz mentioned, Avast has a free edition.

what you need to do is try to register the program by starting the program and clicking the register tab on the start up screen, this will defer you to the avast site were you can register free of charge
you will be sent a e-mail with a license key which you need to enter at the start screen
then once you have the program registered ,either continue to use it,or uninstall it,as its registered you should have no problem removing it
the reason for the removal problem i think is the fact its running unregistered, and this will stop you removing it
good luck

A program cannot be removed it a part of it is still running.
There are lots of programs that run in the background, that may be one of them. I could not tell you which one it would be, though, other wise I'd say use your task manager (press ctl alt del and it should come up.) Go to the "Processes" tab, and it will show you all the running programs. (all .exe file extentions). Check to see if avast is one of them and end it, then try "remove program" (The problem with this is that some programs' .exe file is not always called what the program is. For instance, my AVG program's .exe file is "grisoft") Good luck.

You know there is an avast home edition which is competly free and work awesome. I've been using it for about 2 years now without any virus problems. It updates itself and i've never had a problem with the trial running out.
