Yes, a router and Cat 5 cables are pretty much all that you need. For your laptop, you might get a wireless router.

In either case, I would recommend a LinkSys.

well if your desktop is already on a network, then u would need to connect the laptop to the router the pc is joined onto
or if u want to connect to your desktop direct. you would use a crossovercable
