Just wanted to compare xeon vs pentium.

Im going to be running a community site powered by phpfox. I wanted a good server that can run all the scripts ( chat, IM, blogs, video, etc) Were going to be starting with about 5000 members and moving up after that. Well have about 2gb of ram and 1 terabyte of storage.

example http://phpfoxdemo.com or http://www.bboybunker.com

Is pentium 4, 3.0 ghz good enough to run applications like this?

Or should I go with xeon 2.6 ghz?

Just because you have 5000 members doesn't mean they are all going to log on at the same time - or even the same day. Sometimes, people join and never come back. The number you need to determine is your HITS PER DAY. Then you can size the server and, more importantly, bandwidth (if you're doing video, you want a FAST connection - cable and DSL won't cut it. Neither will a T1. You'll want AT LEAST a fractional T3 or equivalent.

Now I would recommend you buy a Xeon based board capable of handling dual core xeons (or buy an AMD 4x4 board and AMD CPUs). Then, start out with 1 CPU. Dual Core if you can. Then, if you need more power, you can always drop in a second dual core chip.

Pentium (non-XEON) systems cannot use dual processors - only dual cores, so if you get a multi-socket (dual, quad) motherboard/system, you'll need to get a Xeon based system or an AMD based system.
