Looking for a film shown on ch4 in early eighties, a man and wife, have a portrait of their house on the living room wall, they notice one day, a ghostly dark figure has appeared in the portrait.
and it starts moving towards the house..
On the last day, the figure is on the doorstep in the portrait, and they hear knocking at their real front door.... i have tried ch4/imdb but no luck.... thanks to all that help

It sounds exactly like an episode of The Twilight Zone with Rod Serling that I saw, but it was not from the 30's, more like the 60's or 70's. Probably a remake. But your might be able to get an idea if you look up Twilight Zone episodes.

have you asked for ch4 lists of films shown in the eighties? try the imdb and post this question on the website forum....
not rob sterling as this was a 1930 film you said... maybe it was copied in later years....
also do a search: "horror movies of the 1930's''
if you can find out if it was usa or gb made might help you....

you could try turner classic movies but it does sound like an episode from rod serlings"the night gallery"

you might find it on a torrent (downloadable).
Try searching on google for the file title together with the word Torrent.
