I am doing research and would love for some additional thoughts and opinions on this subject. It is said that children will not be labeled these diagnoses, but yet how can we help them if so many of the warning signs are either ignored or not diagnosed until after the child is 18 or older? How can we stop this pattern? Do these children have to kill (things or people) before they are able to be identified or is there a better way ....?Case in point... A child who shows no remorse, lacks responsiblity, refuses to put effort into positive things (but will put in effort into lying and denying), purposefully "eggs" others on to see responses, refuses to acknowledge others thoughts or feelings, is distructive and purposefully will break and destroy things... Are these not some of the characteristics that lead to the previous diagonsises? So we go back to the original question. Why does a child on the path to being a sociopath or psychopath have to kill before being diagnosed and treated?

To WHENRAINB... I never said kill children..Hello!!! Lord - do you people read the questions fully? I'm asking why is it we don't have in place a system to help parents and families in crisises of the worst kind - the families that foster, intentionally or unintentionally, children who can, and sometimes do, become sociopaths and psychopaths. Why is it the system and we as society wait until there is nothing left ot do but clean up the messes these people create?

Also... If these behaviors, though normal to an extent, are in the extreme... how can a person distinguish the difference? Where is the line that distinguishes a child who is exhibiting normal behavior and sociopathy or psychopathy, short of killing?

While profilers know the traits associated with sociopaths & psychopaths who kill - not all sociopaths & psychopaths kill .
I agree , steps should be taken earlier in life . Unfortunately , not enough is known on how to counter this .

Very few children just start exhibiting sociopathic traits out of the blue-- most of the time there's something going on in the kid's life that will cause him or her to develop sociopathic tendencies. But it's also true that we have not yet reached the point in our civilization at which it's ok for some figure of authority to determine that a child's home environment is causing him to develop into a sociopath, and remove the child from that environment before there is a clear-cut and compelling reason to do so.
Yes, kids DO have to kill before they can be treated. That may be bad in a lot of ways, but in my opinion it would be even worse for a government agency to be empowered to remove children from their homes and families just because it SEEMS that they are developing into sociopaths.

You do not need to be a psychopath or anything else to be a good Marine. When you get into combat, if you listened during training it will kick in. I mean the need to survive. It is inbred in the heart of all humans, but the heart of a trained Marine beats to a totally different drum. One of the most laid back easy going guys I had ever seen in boot and advanced turned into a tiger in combat. In our first firefight he could have taken them by his self, but we wanted to have fun too. Seriously, When you are looking at the business end of a weapon the instinct to live will kick in. Out there it is kill or be killed and you know it. This is one of the problems when you fight a guerrilla enemy, because you don't know a friendly from an enemy and if you choose wrong you're dead. The way I think is simple. If there is or has been fire coming from a position, I returned fire. if there were civilians in the group, that's their problem for allowing it. I felt no remorse because it is war, not murder. If you feel that it is wrong to do this for your own and your buddies safety then you need to stay home. If it is going to place any U.S. service man in jeopardy or you, do not and I repeat, Do Not enlist. I would rather see one not go than two not come back. Think long and hard, as I have been to hell, I have fought the devil on his ground, I have both the visible and invisible scars along with the recurring flashbacks. They have been my companions since I returned from combat in 1966. Remember it is the soldier that hates war the most, for it is the soldier that must bear the scars for the rest of his life! SEMPER FI!

Aside from killing others that diagnoses sounds like most young boys. they all do that? But they don't all grown up to be serial killers. So, you really don't know the ornery ones from the psychopath. Unless they start killing animals. If they take joy in tortureing small animals from frogs to cats to dogs.
then you have a problem. I have seen usually little boys do that.
A small number and usually they become wife beaters, child beaters and maybe from nice homes. There is just such a thing as a bad person. Those nothing seems to help.
The most you can hope for is to keep them away from small animals. One child I knew would grow up to be a serial killer and joined the marines. Got to go fight in a war and loved it and is a carreer in the military. I guess there is a spot for everyone.

There's probably a few sociopaths here on Answers, judging by some of the responses/questions I've seen in the past. But, yes- many (or some, at least) of those kids do end up as psychopaths, and that fact should be recognized and appreciated by the medical community. But, what does what I say matter?

you cannot control who sumone is. there will always be serial killers, murderers, and whatever else in the world, you say you wanna help them but you really want to FIX them , well newsflash--ppl with psychotic values cannot be "fixed". they are who they are, its sad but true. the only way you can help them help theirselves is to be patient and offer to listen to whatever theyy have to say. be understanding and not judgemental
