Bad News, a New Cat will cost more than the car is worth. The 2nd hand car market will soon be a thing of the past.
A catalytic converter (colloquially, "cat" or "catcon") is a device used to reduce the toxicity of emissions from an internal combustion engine. First widely introduced on series-production automobiles in the US market for the 1975 model year to comply with tightening EPA regulations on auto exhaust, catalytic converters are still most commonly used in motor vehicle exhaust systems. Catalytic converters are also used on generator sets, forklifts, mining equipment, trucks, buses, trains, and other engine-equipped machines. A catalytic converter provides an environment for a chemical reaction wherein toxic combustion by products are converted to less-toxic gases. The catalytic converter was invented at Trinity College.

hi ya, if you mean rattling when you say (on its way out) this could cause you to break down. the cat is a ceramic material that lives inside the front bit of your exhaust, if its breaking up . it can block your exhaust and stop the engine. The good news cats used to be really expensive but if you shop round you might get one for less than £120 fitted now

A cat is a cool bit of engineering it is made up of 3 different precious metals which break down the dangerous carbon-monoxide gases foom your car and make them a little less damaging to the environment. It's the precious metals that make them so expensive ,you can get very cheap after market parts tho!

the catalytic convertors goal is to convert the harmful emissions (HC, CO, NOx) to CO2 and H20 (carbon dioxide and water). If it fails your emissions may be higher, it may aloso get plugged up which can cause driveabilty issues.
As far as cost goes I imagine the OE Peugot convertor will be quite expensive. You may be able to get a universal convertor (that may take some effort to install) for less $.

If you have lots of problems with the car already you should start budgeting for a new one as the cost of a new catalyst will be more than the cars worth now.
